{sweet surprises: cinnamon bun orange}

Hello friends!

Today I’m going to share something fun (and sweet) that we successfully attempted during our Easter camp trip. I heard about this trick sometime ago and had always wanted to try it. It’s called the “Cinnamon Bun Orange.” Basically you cook a cinnamon bun inside a hollowed out orange over a campfire. The little bun is cooked perfectly and ends up with some citrus hints. Below is a short tutorial on how to do it yourself!

Cinnamon Bun Orange How To:

1. Take an orange, cut it in half, and hollow out both sides. A spoon does the trick, but a citrus juicer makes it even easier.

2. Place a pre-made raw cinnamon bun inside one half of your hollowed out orange. I’ve never tried this with homemade cinnamon buns, (just the store-bought kind), so I’m assuming the cooking time will vary a bit.

3. Place the other half of the hollowed out orange on top of the one with your cinnamon bun and wrap the whole orange completely with foil.

4. Carefully place the foil covered orange into a fire pit. Do not put it directly in the fire, just near enough to the base of the flames to get warm. Let cook for about 20 minutes.

5. After 20 minutes, remove the orange from the fire and carefully unwrap it.

6. Remove the top half of the orange and voila! A perfectly cooked cinnamon bun!

And that’s how you do it! I was very surprised by how great this turned out. It was super moist and cooked all the way through. We only made one cinnamon bun like this and cooked the rest in an oven, but I think next time we may have to make them all this way (the ones in the oven overcooked and burned some). Give it a try on your next camp trip!

After awhile crocodiles!

{sweet surprises: valentine treats from loved ones}

{too sweet}

This Valentine’s Day was extra special. While my loved ones were far away from me, they didn’t hesitate to send much love my way. Mom Ellis sent Jesse and me a Valentine’s care package last week filled with chocolate treats, our favorite game---Farkle, and some sweet cards. I woke up this morning to a giant frog with chocolates, left for me by my hubster before he left to catch his flight. Then after being out all day running around town, I came home to another box of chocolates and beautiful flowers from my parents. It’s always nice to get special surprises from the people you love. Now…if only I can figure out a way to keep the pups from attacking our new green monster.

{sweet surprises: cookie dough cupcake surprise}

{these little cuties are hiding something}

I love cupcakes as I’m sure many of you do as well. What’s even better than a cupcake is a cupcake with a special surprise inside. I’ve had cupcakes with jelly fillings, ganache fillings, cream fillings, but my favorite so far, is cookie dough filling! I made these last year for a party and they were a hit, so I’ve decided to make them again and share the how to with you.

{easy peasy}

The easy part is getting them ready for baking; the hard part is knowing when to take them out of the oven. I used store bought white cake (not from scratch today L), but you can use any type of cake batter.

Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.

Step 2: Fill your cupcake cups half-way with cake batter (save enough to cover the cookie dough later).

Step 3: Plop in your cookie dough (you can make it yourself or use the store bought kind for time sake).

Step 4: Cover the cookie dough with your saved batter.

Step 5: Place your cupcake pans in the oven and let bake for about 20 – 25 minutes.

Step 6: When you test your cupcakes for doneness you have to check both the cake part and cookie dough. Your cookie dough should still be a little gooey, but your cake should be done--clean toothpick.

And that’s how you do it! I frosted my cupcakes with blackberry whipped cream icing and added a little blackberry for some pizzazz. They sure were yummy!

Until next time,

The Mrs.

{sweet surprises: snail mail from a little cutie}

{isn’t she sweet?}

Look what the postman brought to my mailbox? When I lived in Charlotte, I would babysit this little munchkin and her brothers almost every other week. They were a rambunctious bunch, but we had tons of fun every time. I miss them dearly and am long overdue for a visit.

Sometimes the best surprises come from unexpected places ;)

{sweet surprises: bowtie cupcakes}

{aren’t they precious?}

Right before Christmas I made these cupcakes for my neighbor’s dad’s birthday. It’s hard to come up with simple dad friendly cupcakes, but I think these did the trick. Funfetti cake, simple whipped vanilla frosting, and cute little shiny bowties to top it all off.
